Camping in the Crazies

While I may have not been 100% ready, and it may have been super last minute, I pulled together a really quick camping trim up to the crazy mountains before taking off to Europe.

Haze in the air

The air was still full of smoke from the seemingly never-ending fires, but once we got up to the mountains, it started to clear up.

Fresh Air

Because my riding buddy, Benton, doesn’t have a street legal bike, we decided to trailer the motorcycles up to the Crazies to camp by the lake.

Getting to the actual camping site once we reached the trail head was a bit of a challenge, especially since neither of us had bags! I at least had my awesome luggage racks, which made it much easier to tie things to.  In the end on the way there we only lost some poles, which we unfortunately didn’t run into on the way back.

Once we were there, we had a fantastic view.  The sun had just started to go down, so we quickly pitched up the motorcycle tent, or “chateau” as we referred to it was it was so freakin big!

Camping with a fire

Luckily for us a fire was permitted, completing the camping experience with smores!

Smores baby!

The next morning we headed out into a bright, clear day and our motorcycles were waiting for us with a nice ride in mind.

motorcycle morning

We decided to take our time playing around with my new camera! We got some fantastic pics of the bikes, cows, and general Montana scenery.

There were a few rough spots, which always means more fun in my book.  Some of it I wasn’t completely comfortable riding myself, so Benton helped me out.

getting out alive

Truthfully though, I need to stop getting help and just figure it out myself. Otherwise I’ll never learn! So while I went for it pathetically, I went for it anyways, and made it in the end!

Hilary on a motorcycle

While we were making our way to the main camp site to throw away some trash, Benton ended up with a bit of a mishap!

motorcycle mishap

The hook holding the garbage in place had fallen off and gotten jammed in the wheel by the brake.  A serious close call.  Note to self, do not use hooks as tie downs in the future!

We sat by the road for awhile, even got my tool kit out (yes, I was smart and brought a tool kit and first aid kit).  Unfortunately in the end it didn’t help much at all. What did we do? We just pulled it out, using the other end of the tied down that had a longer end to grasp.

Thank goodness we figured it out.  It would have been a headache if the motorcycle wasn’t running at all!  We headed back to the truck taking some beautiful trails along the way.

Montana motorcycle riding

On the way back into town we stopped at a great restaurant to get some good American food. I loved the small towns in Montana, they have a very “Wild West” feel to them.

On the way back, we also saw some white tail! Which I will be hunting when I return to Montana!

It really was a great short overnight trip giving me a great taste of Montana.  From open plains to mountainous terrain, Montana really has all you need for some great off road riding!

In with the New, Out With the Old

Suzuki DR 350 Tank for sale

Ok, sorry for everyone who actually enjoys my weird travel stories! But I noticed I did get a lot of responses of things for sale through the blog, so thought I’d try this.

My new DR has a new tank. Isn’t it pretty? And it holds 3.5 gallons. Woot! Now if only I can get my battery to work so I can actually ride! (had a bit of a headache this morning).

DR350Suzuki with new tank

So I thought I’d give the old one a sell. Its in great condition for being on my motorcycle, really 🙂

Tank

I have to say I did have a little trouble getting everything together. My new tank didn’t come with a petcock, so I was thinking of taking the one from this tank. That didn’t work, it was just too big. So back on the original tank 🙂

Suzuki DR350 Petcock

Which mean this original DR350 tank comes with everything: pressure petcock, screws, cap, key in cap.

Asking price? $120, including shipping.

E-mail me at hilary (at) dirtymotorcycleadventures (dot) com if interested 🙂

That First Motorcycle Ride. Ever.

First Motorcycle RideDo you remember the first time you got on a motorcycle?

I mean the very first time.  Before you were in love with motorcycles. Before the bug bit you.

When I was a kid, I rode a bit on my grandfather’s motorcycle. It was one time. Around the block. Nothing fabulous, I thought it was just cool I was with my grandfather. I was 7, the bug didn’t bite me.

But I remember when it did.

I was dating this guy, and he had a motorcycle. And he wanted to give me a ride on it. I had no proper gear at all, and I borrowed a helmet. He went super fast.  Faster than my liking. But I was hooked. I knew I wanted to ride, and not as a passenger.

So I bought my first motorcycle, took my license classes and exam (in Europe it is a lot longer and harder to get your license than in the U.S. and there is no MSF course). And I’ve been riding ever since.

Now, my little brother has been bugging me to give him a ride on my motorcycle for awhile. As in years.  At first I didn’t want to do it because I wasn’t that good. Now I don’t want to do it because I’m short! And my bike is tall. And the last thing I would want is to have a tip over and ruin his experience.

Francis first ride

So I gave Paul a call.  The man with 6 motorcycles. Who would be better?

Paul's Motorcycles

And my little bro got to go on his first ride with Paul!

First Ride Honda Shadow

And on a Honda Shadow no less. Francis (my brother) had a great time, and he is already looking up MSF courses in his area so he can start getting his license!

Now Paul, as much as I love him, isn’t the best example of gear.  All the Gear All the Time is not a rule Paul follows. But we will forgive him, and hope he never will regret it!

But I thank him for giving my brother a fabulous first experience on the motorcycle. And now he is preparing to take the MSF course to learn to ride, get all of his gear, get his first motorcycle, and start riding!

Do you remember your very first ride? If so, tell us about it!

Getting back on the motorcycle

I usually enjoy crashing here and there. It means I’m pushing my limit on the motorcycle, and gaining some skill.

That being said, when I crash I don’t hurt myself that badly.

That was until my faceplant which gave me a bloody nose.  Something I’ve never had before.  As well as a bruised palm and sore thigh.  I’m used to those things, it was the nose that really hurt.

So two weekend later I get back on the motorcycle, on some rocky trails. And I was as stiff as a stiff. And when you are stiff and riding off road, the motorcycle does everything you don’t want it to do!

I tipped over several times, and didn’t get hurt badly, which helped. See, I can crash/tip and not injure my nose!

Still, my adrenaline was running, and I got tired very quickly. I compared it to a first date, when your heart is just racing from nerves.  Not a good condition to ride in.

Two weeks after my first ride back on the motorcycle, it is a beautiful day, and I go out riding again with Paul.

Suzuki in the Bridgers

This time we go on a not-so-tough trail with a gorgeous view.  Which probably distracted me from my fear. This is why I love to ride!

I love to Ride!

There were definitely some tough spots, but not too tough.  And there were some spots we skipped, just because it was tough, and the turn around was even worse. I was on a roll and didn’t want to ruin it!

Dirt Road in the Bridgers

One thing I do love about Montana is the nature out and about. I have no idea why butterflies seem to be attracted to motorcycles, but they are!

Motorcycle Butterflies

The best part about it all? I didn’t crash once! (The tip over from my short legs does not count!)

The moral of the story? You gotta get back on the motorcycle after your crash.  It may seem scary, but don’t push yourself. Go slow if you need to (not too slow, you know that doesn’t work).  Start with easier trails and work your way up again.

If you push through your fear, soon you will find your reason for riding once again.

Reason to Ride

Exploring the Bridger Mountains in Montana

Bridger Mountain Riding in MontanaWhen I landed in Bozeman, Montana, I had no idea about the riding area here.

Boy was I lucky!

Not only is there Pipestone & Radersburg, two riding areas about an hour from Bozeman, but there are tons of riding areas in my back yard!

And my new friend Paul is kind enough to show me around and kick my butt while doing so!

The first spot he took me up a trail designated for humans, dogs, bicycles and motorcycles.

Bridgers Trails Part I

It was a bit intense, and I was worried people would shake their fist at us, but everyone was super nice! Of course, I’m in Montana 🙂

Bridger Mountain Trails

The road was tough for me, single trail makes me nervous, plus the giant trees in the road were interesting to go around (I actually had Paul help me. I know, lame).

All in all it was a freakin awesome trail and I can’t wait to go back! You can check out the video too.

The next trail we went up was a bit easier. Not as narrow, and a lot less people.  Still awesome fun though!  And on the way there it was beautiful Montanan scenery.

Along the way we even ran into some badgers fighting on the road. I got a great pic of one poking his head out of their hiding hole.

Badger

Again, I got more great video of the dirt trail (not as many pictures).  It included a river crossing and the gorgeous view in the first image. Unfortunately I started to get tired. Which means I started falling down left and right.  Time to go home!

And because I crash all the time, I made some crash videos. All the time 🙂 This has that great river (ok, stream) crossing too!

This past weekend Paul took me on some more great trails on the Bridgers, this time by Flathead pass.

Bridgers Flathead Pass

The first trail we explored was really cool, and one Paul has never been on! We found an old mine and cottage up in the mountains, and the trail was tough but a lot of fun!

Mine on a dirt road

And again, the scenery was pretty awesome.

Suzuki DR350 Bridgers

Paul also had a fun time playing on a hill, that I was smart enough not to follow. He had a little tip over (when my camera was off) and had fun going down!

Paul motorcycle down hill

The second trail we went on was a lot of fun… but got the better of me! I ended up doing a full blown face plant, and a rock seemed to get through my helmet and hit my nose! Luckily I don’t bruise easily, and don’t tend to bleed much. But it still hurts and my hand is blue!

Suzuki DR 350 crash

You know what the best part of the crash was? We both got it on video. Oh dear.  I personally can’t watch it anymore, it tends to make my nose ache. But enjoy my pain!

I have to say, gotta love the GoPro Helmet Camera.  Makes it all worth it!
