Gel Battery Upgrade for the Transalp

Posted by on May 7, 2011

Since the battery that was on the Transalp didn’t hold the charge very well and Hilary wants to lay motorcycles on their side here and there we wanted to upgrade the old acid battery for a more modern sealed gel type battery.

We took out the old one and measured it to make sure we bought the correct size battery old one had the dimensions: 134 x 80 x 161 mm.

We bought the new one from an auto parts store in Sweden, Biltema but found the battery online as well .  They list the dimensions in inches but its the same.

If replacing the battery we recommend measuring the old and also look at the connection that positive and negative are in the correct place, on some batteries they are switched and your cables might be to short.

New and old battery:

Old in back and new in front

Cleaned the connections they had some corrosion on them:

Cleaned the contacts

The new battery had a small cut out on the top the old didn’t have so to make sure its secure and can’t move around on rough roads we need to fill that gap:

A gap to fill out to secure it

After some measuring and finding a piece of thick rubber to cut a piece from, some lube WD-40 or similar really help out when cutting rubber:

Some scrap rubber laying around the garage

Not sure where we went wrong but the first try was way to big so had to cut some off it:

Made it to big so had to cut off a little more

All bolted back together:

And all bolted back together
